Seeking New Business Mentorship and Direction

Greetings fellow Lasallians!

My name is Terence Ty, new to DLS-NorCal, graduate of DLSU-Taft ID 94, BSC-BMG. I'm reaching out seeking help from any one or more Alumni who can lend me a hand with mentorship for a new business concept which I raised seed money and have been doing due diligence for the past two years. I've reached out to some angel forums in the Bay Area but have not been getting the traction I would hope for. I've exhausted all the assistance that the Small Business Administration's SCORE Counselors of America can provide and I have quit my job last May to give everything I’ve got to get this project implemented. Under the circumstances, I'm close to contemplating defeat, but before I do I would like an opportunity for trusted Alumni for some direction. Thank you and God Bless! Animo La Salle!

DLSAANC v DLSAASC

To my fellow Norcal Lasallians.

We have been challenged by DLSAASC. They are bringing 20-25 golfers to support our Fil-Am golf tournament. Of these, about 6 are really low handicappers. I have played with 2 of them in the past and these two, Ali Yniguez and Benjie Sumulong are legitimate 1 handicappers.

Anyway, they are asking for a North vs. South either for bragging rights or we could put a little wager in it. All in all, it will be for the competition and the fun of playing golf with our Southern Cal Lasallians.

In order to organize this properly, and decide on a format, we need to know as early as possible, how many of you will be playing at the Fil-Am. I am hoping that all of you will make an effort to play. Please email Orly Mayor, Art Dancel, Arnold Mercado, Matt Hizon and/or myself. Hope you can all come and show your support for DLS Greens and DLSAANC.

Thanks,

Tom

Congrats: Jojo, Matt, Enrique and Mandy!

I just wanted you all to know that the team of Espiritu, Hizon, Olives, and Reyes, represented DLS Greens very well at last week-end's NCGA Associate Club championship held at Spyglass and Poppy Hills. They finished a very respectable 7th, only 5 strokes off the pace set by the leaders. They were certainly in the mix and a slightly better score on day 1 could have had them in the leader's spot. They did rally with 20 under on the final day.

Congratulations to the team!!!! Maybe next year!

I have attached copies of the registration and solicitation forms for your use.

Bulletin for Sunday's Picnic

Hi All!

Thanks to the assistance of St. Mary's College resident Br. Aquinas aka Dominic Berardelli, FSC, we have the green light shining for Sunday's picnic:

1. Br. Dom has graciously arranged for signs (with green balloons) that will be set-up to direct alumni to our picnic area (Justin-Mitty Grove) on Sunday. The guards at the main gate nevertheless have been instructed to give you directions to the picnic area.

2. Br. Dom recommends that alumni who will be attending the Sunday mass to park their vehicles at the picnic area and walk to the chapel. BTW, the mass is actually sponsored by another alumni group (Notre Dame) that is having its picnic also on the same day. That group has graciously allowed us to "piggyback" on their observance of the mass. I call on all green-blooded Lasallians/La Sallites/La Sallistas not only to attend the mass but have their rosaries on their pockets like we were taught to as well!

As of 9PM today, there are close to 70 who have RSVP'd to me for Sunday's event. This includes out-of-town guests and mentors like Mrs. Nelia Ruiz, Br. Brenden Madden, FSC, and, of course, Br. Dom. Knowing the Filipino's penchant for last minute decisions, I expect a lot more. I have noted Tom's emails today to his Lasallian egroups and expect to get additional RSVPs. Remember, I am making a list and checking it twice! ;) Those who are not on my list will be relegated to the end of the buffet line!! That said, I will be out of town (again) tomorrow but can be reached via cell phone 925.683.7717. I can also check my phone for emails. I am willing to do last-minute preparation for those who have not RSVP'd yet, including those who earlier contacted me but were unsure if they were attending. Last, may I remind those coming with 3 or more to bring a little extra food and/or drinks to share with our community!

To get to Saint Mary's from San Francisco, cross the Bay Bridge (Highway 80) and take Highway 580 to Highway 24 towards Walnut Creek/Concord. Once through the Caldecott Tunnel, use the Orinda/Moraga exit. From the exit, turn right onto Moraga Way and drive for five miles into the town of Moraga. Once in Moraga, turn left at Moraga Road and proceed to the next light, which is Saint Mary's Road, and take a right. The campus is one mile on the right-hand side.

From the South Bay and San Jose areas, take Highway 680 North to Highway 24 West towards Oakland. Take the Central Lafayette exit, circle under the freeway, and turn right on Mt. Diablo Blvd. Turn left at the first stoplight, Moraga Road, and then a left again at Saint Mary's Road (the third stoplight). The campus is four and a half miles on the left-hand side.

From the Sacramento Area, take Highway 80 West to Highway 680 South and cross the Benicia Bridge. Proceed on 680 to Highway 24 West towards Oakland. Take the Central Lafayette exit, circle under the freeway, and turn right on Mt. Diablo Blvd. Turn left at the first stoplight, Moraga Road, and then a left again at Saint Mary's Road (the third stoplight). The campus is four and a half miles on the left-hand side.

See you Sunday!

4th FILAM AMATEUR GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP

Dear La Salle Community,

The De La Salle Alumni Association of Northern California (DLSAANC) hosts the 4th Annual Filipino-American Amateur Golf Championship on September 27, 2008 at Deer Ridge Golf Course in Brentwood, California. Proceeds, donations and sponsorships received for this golf event will benefit charity projects in the Philippines such as Bro. Stephen Rabisa Fund (Lipa City), a scholarship fund for deserving students from underprivileged families, and Bahay Pagasa (Bacolod City), a wholistic rehabilitation center of errant juveniles in conflict with the law so they can rejoin society as productive citizens with dignity and a hope for a better future.

Kindly extend the invitation to your friends and neighbors so we can fill the 72 slots allotted. Tournament fee is $125 which includes green fee, cart and dinner. In addition to trophies, prizes include a round trip airline ticket to Manila, Philippines, and $20,000 cash grand prize for hole-in-one competition. We are also seeking for sponsors whose contributions can make a difference in the success of this event. Attached are benefits to the sponsors for their support. Non-cash donations are also welcomed for raffle prizes. Please let us know if you have a prospective sponsor and we will send them a letter. The flyer, player registration and Sponsor Benefits attachments have been sent out to the DLS-NorCal@googlegroups.com email listing. If you are not in the listing, let me know and I will forward them.

As One La Salle, we can make this major fund-raising event a success for the benefit of charity in the Philippines.

Animo!

Summer Picnic on August 17

Hi All!

I am pleased to announce that our annual picnic will be held next month on Sunday August 17 at the St. Mary's College in Moraga. Br. Dominic Berardelli, FSC, aka Br. Aquinas will host us in his home campus. We have also invited Br. Fidelis (John O'Neil) and Br. Armand Garcia, FSC and hope they can drive all the way from their Mont La Salle residence.

The day's activities will start with the 11AM mass at the college chapel. The picnic will commence immediately after the mass a couple of hundred yards away at the Justin-Mitty Park. We actually request our alumni and friends to park at the picnic area before proceeding to the chapel since the front parking lot will be quite a distance away from the Justin-Mitty Park. The picnic area can be accessed by turning right at the entrance of the SMC campus and following the winding road. We will be putting signs to help you get there; you can also ask the guard at the entrance for directions.

Per tradition, the event is free for the association's paid members (if you haven't done so, please get in touch with our treasurer, Matt Hizon at mathews_hizon@msn.com) and their spouse/significant other. However, if you are bringing more company, we request that you bring something to share. BTW, beer and wine are allowed but BYOB.

The picnic area has facilities for beach volleyball and basketball and the SMC campus is a good place to walk around. The association plans to have a few games, including a golf bunker competition (bring your favorite sand wedge!), to liven up the afternoon. But it'll be mainly shooting the breeze with fellow alums and former mentors. Speaking of which, you will surely score pogi points if you bring Br. Dom his favorite adobo!!

Please RSVP me no later than August 6 (I will be away on vacation from 8/7 to 8/14) so we can best prepare our fun day!

Update 2 on Manny Noguera

Dear Friends,

I have great pleasure on informing you that he has completed the successful surgery. He is responding greatly to the medication and his heart is even stronger than before. We appreciate all the blessings and thoughtful words; it means the world to us. I do however have bad news on regards to visitors. Right now, the ICU is only accepting immediate family to visit. However, beginning Monday, anyone will be allowed to visit. The visiting hours are from 12:30pm-8:30 pm, at Seton Hospital. The room number and other critical information will be posted as soon as Nogy gets settled in. If anything changes, I will make sure to inform you all. If there are other questions, feel free to email them to me. Thanks again for all the blessings!

Kundirana Concert Tomorrow

Hi Guys!

Seems I forgot some important details from my last posting. They are:

Kundirana 2008 Concert

To my fellow Lasallians and friends,

Although this year, the Kundirana concert is being promoted by a group other than the DLSAANC, the noble cause that the Kundirana music ministry serves is still the same. Proceeds from the concert will go to Bahay Pagasa. In the Philippines, due to budget constraints, juveniles, some aged as low as 12 years old, who commit crime, many of them, non-violent and poverty related, are put in adult jails while awaiting trial. Just try to imagine a 12 year old who got caught stealing a cell phone so he could sell it to buy rice for his starving family, put in jail next to a hardened murderer or rapist. Your $20 will buy you a nice concert by pretty good high school singers, but more importantly, your $20 will buy that 12 year old a chance to become a productive citizen of the world. Not only will you have a good time, you will also feel good about helping. Guaranteed!

Please come to the concert, or if you can't come, I hope you will consider donating any amount to help. If you want tickets, please give me a call at 650-892-3312 or just come to the concert venue and get tickets there. Otherwise, you can mail your donation to me at Tom Consunji, 235 Surfbird Isle, Foster City, CA 94404. Please make your check payable to DLSAANC and put Kundirana on the memo portion.

Thank you in advance. It is your generosity that gives the marginalized youth in the Philippines a chance.

Tom

Subject: Kundirana 2008 Concert

Pls. pass this announcement among your relatives, friends and officemates. Pls. see the concert on May 3rd (Saturday). The tickets are $20 each. The concert will benefit the unfortunate children in the Philippines. The Kundirana produced well known singers like Gary Valenciano and Ogie Alcasid among others. There will be a meet and greet at Roberto's Restaurant at St. Francis Square corner of Southgate Ave and St. Francisc Blvd, a block away from Serramonte Plaza Shopping Mall on May 2 Friday (5:30 to 8;30PM). Pls. be there to see them. The Kundirana is a Ministry of Touching hearts through the Language of Music & Character formation of each Song Artist. These exceptional Christian Gentlemen spend much of their time balancing their academic responsibilities in school while keeping in touch with realities in real life among the marginalized in the Philippines . In Bacolod, the Kundirana aims to generate much needed funds to support a magnificent work of God - The "Bahay Pag-asa" Center (House of Hope) for the rehabilitaiton of children in conflict with the law and the "Balay Kalinungan" Prayer Pavilion. The Kundirana's task is accomplished by holding Concert Tours in the Philippines as well as in the U.S. They will be in town for one of their benefit concerts. In this spirit, I'm appealing to you for your kind and generous support. All donations are tax deductible. Cash or checks can be made payable to : De La Salle Inc. c/o Kundirana. Receipts with Tax Exemption Certificate from the U.S. Government will be issued accordingly. Thank You and hoping for your kindness and generous support.

God Bless You.

As We Grieve For Gjay de la Rosa and Family

To all fellow Lasallians,

We are all numbed by the sad and tragic news about the horrible accident in Pasadena a few days ago. Why does this happen to a very young child who had just arrived in the US and just enjoying their first morning in California? Why does it happen to an unsuspecting father and child who were just merrily strolling, holding hands, and enjoying a walk on the sidewalks of Old Pasadena? Why does it happen to a young child who is practically sinless at his age? Why? Why? Why? We can only ask this question, over and over again, and not get any answer nor justification. It is most difficult to explain why things like this happen. From the olden times, philosophers, elders, and wise men tried to come up with explanations but none could. The Book of Ecclesiastes is the closest that can "explain" something like this. Here is an excerpt from that Book. Hopefully, it can heal our anger, our brokeness, our sadness.

A MATTER OF TIME; EVERYTHING HAS ITS TIME

(excerpted from Book of Ecclesiastes)

For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die;

A time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;

Just as there is a time for being born, And a time for dying, there is also a time for grieving and passing of our sorrow Everything is all a matter of time No mortal has control of time, Nor what happens today or tomorrow Some die young, some die old Some die poor, and some die wealthy It is all a futile effort to understand In the end, the rich and the poor, the diligent and the slacker Must all meet the same end. Whatever gains have been made during their brief time on earth Will vanish at the moment of death (in remembrance of the De La Rosa family: April 8, 2008) God bless this family and all of us who mourn and grieve. May we all find comfort and peace from our Maker. And most importantly, the assurance that GJay is in heaven, in the company of angels and saints, and in the ecstatic presence of God. …………………………

Let Us Pray

Dear LaSallians,

Let us all come together in the stillness of our hearts as we say a prayer.

Heavenly Father, we humbly commend to you GJay DelaRosa whom you have called out of this mortal life. Receive him into your kingdom where there is no more suffering and pain but only peace and joy forever. We pray that he may be able to glorify you with the life that he lived. We also pray for the healing of all unhappy feelings GJay's death now leaves particularly in the hearts of his family and all those whom he touched in his lifetime. Give them comfort and peace in this time of sorrow and sadness. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord. And let your perpetual light shine upon him.

Amen. Art Dancel <

Fellow Lasallians,

I just received an email informing that LSGH Grade 2 student old Gjay de la Rosa (7 years old) passed away yesterday at Huntington Hospital in Pasadena. Please offer up your prayers for the family.

For those who are interested in what happened, below is an email from Ali Yniguez who is a nurse at Huntington.

Subject: Prayer Request for a LSGH Student speedy recovery from a tragic accident in Pasadena

Hello friends and family, Last Thursday there was a freak accident at a popular spot near my workplace called, "Old Town Pasadena." That day, a family visiting from the Philippines happened to be there when tragedy struck them. They were just strolling along, just as any of us shoppers and window shoppers do all the time...when all of a sudden, a car comes striking at them. From reports it is said the father and their 7YO boy were critically injured and brought to my hospital (Huntington Memorial) in the intensive care unit. Both received crush injuries to their legs, but more severely in the childs, as eyewitnesses state that his leg was severed. My thoughts and prayers are with this family and I hope to pay a visit to them tomorrow. What hits me even more is that this family had just arrived to the States for the first time before this accident happened. The child is only a 2nd grader at my alma mater, La Salle Green Hills. And I first heard of this news moments ago through our strong LaSallian Network from Northern California and the Philippines. Just thought I'd share this with you and I hope to see them tomorrow. Please pray for the DeLa Rosa Family.

Need Kundirana Host Families

Fellow La Sallians,

The Kundirana, a music ministry from La Salle Green Hills, comes to the US on a concert tour every year to raise money principally for Bahay Pag-Asa, an alternative to jail for juvenile delinquents. The first facility started in Bacolod and another one is being put up in Cavite to serve the Metro Manila area.

DLSAANC has sponsored Kundirana in the past and this has allowed us to raise funds in support of our charities in the Philippines. While the current board decided not to sponsor the concert this year, we have nevertheless committed to support the concert both in terms of logistics as well as encouraging our La Sallians to go and watch the concert.

The Kundirana will be here from May 1 to 5 and the concert will be at the St. Matthews auditorium on May 3rd. I will send you more details later. For now, I am asking for some volunteers who are willing to host two of these Kundirana kids from the evening of May 1st to May 5th, when they depart via PAL to go back to the Philippines. The hosting involves some driving around for these kids as they make a trip to St. Mary's and other sightseeing tours. If you are willing and able to host the kids but can not commit to all the driving, that's ok too, as other arrangements can be made.

Could you please email me if you would like to host two of the Kundirana singers? It would be a nice way to give back to the La Sallian community. Many of the activities center around the City of SF and the Northern Peninsula so preferably, a home proximate to those areas are more convenient.

Please email me and thanks in advance. I hope to see many of you at the concert.

2008–05

Dear Brothers and Partners:

Br. Gus Boquer FSC. In a routine check up at the beginning of February, it was found that Br. Gus had an irregular heartbeat. After undergoing more intensive tests, including an angiogram, the doctors discovered that one of his arteries was blocked in three parts. He underwent a successful angioplasty last 4 February wherein they were able to insert a series of stents that opened up the blocked artery. He is now back to work and staying in his residence in Dasmarinas.

Br. Felix Masson, FSC +

Fellow alumni,

Our beloved Br. Felix Masson, FSC passed away yesterday at Mont La Salle in Napa. Br. Dominic Berardelli, FSC has informed me that funeral arrangements are being finalized and is scheduled for Friday Feb. 8, also as Mont La Salle. We will post the appropriate announcement as it comes in this same forum.

Br. Felix is one of the longest-serving American Christian Brother in the Philippines. Born in 1919, Br. Felix came to the Philippines at a very young age and served in the various La Salle campuses in the country. He is one of the two founders of the University of St. La Salle, then known as La Salle Bacolod. An educator to the end, he still taught the boys at Bahay Pag-Asa in Bacolod in the twilight of his life. I witnessed one of those classes and saw how his students -- erstwhile juvenile delinquents -- got animated in his presence. It was the same charisma that drew the young boys at La Salle Bacolod, La Salle Green Hills and DLS-Zobel, among others, to the humorous and witty Brother. Many of his students fondly remember the domino games he played and/or the stampitas that he gave out to mark their birthdays.

Br. Felix retired to Mont La Salle in November 2006 as his health condition worsened. The DLSAANC held its annual picnic there last July 2007 in an effort to reach out to the ailing but still affable Brother. It was a bittersweet reunion since the condition of his skin cancer had become more apparent. Amazingly, Br. Felix never complained of any pain, his fellow Brothers attested.

God bless you, Br. Felix!

FSC Bulletin 2008-19: Prayers for Br. Felix Masson

Fellow Lasallians:

Below is a portion of the FSC Bulletin emailed to me by Br. Visitor Dodo Fernandez, FSC. Let us keep our beloved Br. Felix in our prayers!

**********************

04 February 2008

2008 – 03

Dear Brothers and Partners:

Based on Br. Gus’ onversation with Br. Ronald Roggenback, Director of the community at Napa, as well as his own email to Br. Hans Moran, the following is an update on the condition of Br. Felix:

Last week, Br. Felix started getting very weak and could not get out of bed. His vital signs started to fail; he stopped drinking milk and water and slept for most of the week. He has been under constant care for almost two weeks now and has not left his room even in his wheel chair. He received the Sacrament of Anointing and Viaticum. However, his condition improved and his vital signs are back to normal. He has begun to take nourishment again although he is still weak and not speaking. His cancer wound on the lower lip has not healed and morphine is administered to

him every two hours. According to Br. Ronald, “he is an amazing person, he has never complained about, has always been cheerful and always says thank you”.

Let us keep Br. Felix in our prayers!

Happy Thanksgiving!

I hope you are all enjoying your time spent with family this holiday. I want to wish all of you a very happy Thanksgiving. We do have a lot to be thankful for.

In that regard, year end is coming and I know that many of you are doing some tax planning. If your tax planning involves donations to charity, I would like you all to consider giving some of your donations to DLSAANC. We have two very specific needs right now.

One is to fund the Scholarship that DLSAANC started many many years ago. This scholarship is for one student at DLSU and we need somewhere in the order of $12k to $15k in order to fill up the amount necessary to fund a perpetual scholarship in the name of DLSAANC.

Another one is for the scholarship at DLS Lipa, where after some deft negotiating on the part of some of our La Sallian friends who are members of DLSAANC, $100 funds one student for a whole year of study at DLS Lipa, be it Grade school, High School, or College.

DLSAANC is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization, and all of your donations are tax-deductible. DLSAANC will issue an acknowledgement receipt on request. So, as we enter this holiday season, please remember our less fortunate brethren in the Philippines and think about whether you can help give some of them the opportunity to receive a La Sallian education, like we did.

Happy Thanksgiving to you all!

DLS Greens Renewal

TO ALL CURRENT AND PROSPECTIVE DLS GREENS GOLFERS:

We have concluded our 2007 Tournament Season.

Congratulations to our new Golfer of the Year, Art Dancel. He played consistent all year and won the GOY going away. Our gratitude also goes to our golf committee who have worked hard to ensure the smooth running of our tournaments.

It is now time to renew your DLS Greens memberships for 2008. If you are a 2007 DLS Greens member, please send your check for $75 payable to DLSAANC to Matt Hizon, 949 Coventry Way, Milpitas, CA 95035.

Your check pays the following: $30 NCGA renewal fee $35 2008 DLSAANC membership $10 2008 DLS GREENS membership $75 If you are a new DLS GREENS member for 2008, but an existing NCGA member, please send a check for $80. The breakdown is the same as above, plus $5 to set you up as a DLS Greens member. If you are new to DLS GREENS and not an NCGA member for 2007, please send a check for $85. The extra $5 goes to NCGA for set up, and $5 to DLS Greens for set up. Please send your checks right away to ensure proper accounting. Deadline for sending your checks is on December 1st. After that date, your name will be removed from the roster and you may have to pay the renewal rate. For new members, please note that you will become NCGA members as soon as your checks are received and you are set up, and your membership fee is for 2008. The earlier you send in your checks, the more "free" months of membership in 2007 you will have. So please send in your checks to begin enjoying being a DLS GREENS member. We have an exciting 2008 coming up.

The tournament schedule for 2008 is given below. There are some changes that will be instituted next year in order to make our tournaments more fun and interesting.

Here are some of the changes:

In addition to Golfer of the Year, we will also have a Most Improved Golfer of the Year. This will be won by the golfer, whose handicap improvement, in terms of percentage, is the highest from the first tournament to the final one of the year.

We will have a season-long match play club championship ladder. We will be asking who want to participate in this championship and set it up such that the finals will be in our final tournament. The start will depend on how many people participate. The ladder will be set and it will be a knockout tournament, with the winners advancing to the next round, and so on. Watch out for further announcements of the rules. We will mix up the tournament formats for our tournaments and move away from the normal low net, for every tournament. GOY will still be computed on the basis of low net positions, but tournament winners will be determined based on different formats.

With the help of one of our golfers, Manny Noguera, we will try to get DLS Greens accredited to participate at the PAL Interclub held each February in the Philippines. This will allow us to send a team from DLS Greens members to that fun and competitive event, that involves about 300 golfers. 2008 Tournament Schedule:

Sunday, March 16 10am Deer Ridge, Brentwood (2 man scramble)

Sunday, April 20 10am Callippe Pleasanton (low net, start of match play)

Sunday, May 18 10am Poppy Hills, Carmel (stableford, continuation of match play)

Sunday, June 18 11am Poppy Ridge, Livermore (Point par)

Saturday, July 19 10am Monarch Bay, San Leandro (low net)

Saturday, August 16 10am Palo Alto Muni (low net)

Saturday, September 16 11am Deer Ridge, Brentwood FilAm) (Modified Stableford)

Saturday, October 18 10am Franklin Canyon (low net) (Match play final) So please send in your checks and kindly inform me via email so I can keep track.

Thanks,

Tom

FSC Bulletin 2007-31: Br. Johnston Update

Below is the portion of FSC Bulletin 2007-31 issued Oct. 9 by Br. Visitior Edmundo Fernandez, FSC:

*****************************

Update on Br. John Johnston FSC. The following are excerpts from an update by (Midwest) District Nurse Pat Bader:

Br. John has developed a mouth and throat infection that is painful and causes him to have laryngitis of sorts. He is having great difficulty speaking. This infection is caused by yeast, the result of both antibiotics and chemotherapy. He is on IV therapy to fight this. His white blood cell count is low, the result of chemotherapy. Because of this, he is highly susceptible to infections. The common cold or improper handwashing could be threatening to him.

His overall condition continues to decline. He is now only moving from the bed to the side of the bed and he is only able to stand for a few minutes.

Due to the above, we have requested nursing assistants from 24/7, which is an increase over the current 12 hour. I will be staying with Br. John tomorrow as we get the schedule finalized.

We will also be in a "No Visitor" mode for the next few days (excluding the Brothers and his family). This is to decrease his exposure to germs carried by the many people in and out of his room.

Thank you all so very much. I hope we can make this part of Br. John's journey as dignified, peaceful and symptom free as we can. May we all pray with Br. John that he has the strength to "Drink the Cup."

FSC Bulletin 2007-30: Myanmar and Br. Johnston

Below are excerpts from FSC Bulletin 2007-30 issued today by Brother Visitor Edmundo Fernandez, FSC:

Dear Brothers and Partners:

PRAYERS REQUESTED. Let us continue to keep the Brothers of the Sub District of Myanmar in our prayers. I was able to get in touch with Br. Lucas via telephone and he says “all is quiet” in the capital and that the it is “business as usual”. It is very difficult to communicate via email although he has one account that seems to be working. I am in constant communication with Br. Mark Murphy FSC and Br. David Hawke FSC and we are currently discerning whether to push through with the Sub District chapter and annual retreat at the end of October.

Br. John Johnston FSC has had a “drastic change” in his condition. He is currently “on oxygen, his lungs are filled with fluid, he has fever and his blood pressure is low”. Brothers have volunteered to be at his bedside constantly and doctors are closely monitoring his condition. Br. Ed Salgado FSC was also hospitalized due to extreme stomach pain. He is suffering from diverticulitis, a common digestive disorder of the large intestine. He is currently being treated with anti biotics at St. Francis Hospital, Memphis where Br. John Johnston is also under care.

Fraternally,

Br. Dodo Fernandez, FSC

Subject: Fwd: [LSGH_Manos] Fwd: Angie Magbanua

Do you remember Angie Magbanua? She used to teach Literature and Drama in LSGH, from 1967 to 1976, then she ventured into scriptwriting then directing TV specials, corporate shows and concerts. She has directed a few LSGH Homecoming events, and recently, our local version of the three tenors featuring government officials Bayani Fernando, Joey Lina and Angelo Reyes. Angie Magbanua is the huge lady with an even bigger heart. I hope you guys still remember her because she is quite ill at present, undergoing dialysis thrice a week, since September last year, due to

complications of being a diabetic. I've been in touch with her these past several years, not just because of some projects we worked on together, but mostly to keep in touch with a person who has shown nothing but kindness, encouragement and care over her "Lasalista children".

The sad fact is that due to her illness, she has depleted her financial resources. She has used up her life savings spending for her various treatments and medications. Jobs in showbiz have become hard to come by, although she can still get to direct or write once in a while for some corporate shows. Despite her condition, her creative juices still flow in her system. However, I don't think she should still continue working in her condition now.

She has been hospitalized several times this past two years: for her heart condition, kidney failure, and early this year, to insert a heart pacemaker. She now spends around P6,000 per session, thrice a week (P2,230.00 for the dialysis treatment, P1,000 for the dializer, and P2,800 for 2 vials of 5,000 units of Recormon after dialysis). She also injects insulin for her diabetes (Humulin twice a day, Humalog before each meal, and Humulin R when her blood sugar reaches 180 onwards), plus other antibiotics being a diabetic with kidney failure and heart pacemaker.

Because of her situation, I volunteered (against her wishes, actually) to email as many people as I can to appeal for financial or medical assistance for Angie. I would like to propose a "ONE DAY FOR ANGIE" fundraising campaign. Since it takes around P6,000 per treatment day, a donation of

P6,000 (or any equivalent in terms of medication) would go a long way in helping a teacher, mentor and friend, who has touched so many lives with her kindness, motherly care and generosity. For those she has helped in any way before, now is the time to repay her kindness by extending financial or any form of assistance to Angie. Of course, you are not limited to the amount suggested, for any amount will do. For those who would want to extend financial assistance, please deposit the money directly to her account:

Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) Angela/Angie Magbanua

Account Number 2383-0226-92 (Tandang Sora Branch)

Once you have made a deposit, please inform her via email:

angie_magbanua@yahoo.com or contact her directly at 0917-8980883 or her office/home number 454-6439. I'm sure hearing from her former students would cheer her up too.

Someone suggested to organize a fundraising concert to be led by those she has helped in the business. Although that's also a good idea, it may take time for that to materialize. In the meantime, she is subsisting on loans from other people, and financial assistance from some kind friends and relatives.

By shelling out P6,000, you give Angie one more day of hope, and life. I hope and pray that the generous souls out there would be most willing to help.

Thank you very much.

FSC Bulletin 2007-29: Br. Benildo and Br. Franco

Below is part of the latest FSC Bulletin from Br. Visitor Edmundo Fernandez, FSC issued last Saturday Sept. 22:

Br.Benildo continues with his radiation therapy treatment for his prostate cancer. He goes from Monday to Friday until the maximun dosage is completed or a total of 40 sessions up to mid-October. At this time, the trip to Medical City and back to Taft is more taxing than the actual radiation, there being no side effects so far. His oncologist expects a good prognosis.

Br. Victor Franco FSC will be installed as the 8th President of De La Salle – College of Saint Benilde on September 27, 2007, Feast of Blessed Scubillion, at 3:00 in the afternoon. A Eucharistic Celebration will precede the installation rites. Let us keep Br. Vic in our prayers!

Prayers for Br. Gene

From FSC Bulletin 2007-28 issued Sept. 4, 2007 by Br. Visitor Edmundo Fernandez, FSC:

Br. Gene Tianco FSC suffered a Temporary Ischemic Attack (TIA) last Saturday, September 1. He was brought to Cardinal Santos Memorial Hospital and underwent several tests. His MRI showed that, though undetected, he suffered several TIAs. He also underwent a Doppler Test to determine whether there were blockages in his blood flow. He was discharged last 4 September and is resting in his community. He will undergo several more tests this Saturday.

(Ed's note: The MedlinePlus medical encyclopedia defines Temporary Ischemic Attack as a "mini-stroke" caused by temporary disturbance of blood supply to an area of the brain, which results in a sudden, brief decrease in brain function.

Back from the Dead

My dear friends,

First off, thanks for all your support and prayers during my medical ordeal. It would have been much harder for me had you folks not been ralllying me on.

I am out of the hospital now and slowly, but surely, recovering. As some of you may know, the doctors started treatment of my liver cancer shortly before Christmas last year with chemotherapy and radiation. In late March a liver became available for me and I went to the UCSF Medical Center for surgery. But while on the operating table my heart went crazy. The doctors were afraid that I might have a heart attack so they decided to abort the procedure. They sewed me back up and revived me. Subsequent tests showed that my heart was healthy and would be able to withstand the liver transplant surgery.

In early May another liver became available. I instructed the doctors to proceed with the transplant even if my heart goes crazy again. If they are able to control my heart, fine. If not, well, que sera sera. My heart did go nuts again and the doctors talked to my children who told them to go ahead with the transplant. Fortunately, things went well with the 13-hr. operation and they were able to replace my liver and eventually revive me. I don't know at what point in time it happened but I can still see in my mind's eye that I died and was buried. It was, and still is, a weird feeling, to say the least.

Three weeks after the surgery an infection set in and they had to operate on me again. This time the doctors had to cut the infected tissue so that left a large open wound on the upper part of my abdomen, from which one could see my liver. At first I did not want to take a look at it because it would have freaked me out. They also found some perforations in my stomach and closed those. While still in the intensive care unit other complications arose and were taken care of with painful medical procedures.

I think everything that could go wrong with the operation went wrong. As a result I spent 5 weeks in intensive care and another 5 weeks in the regular hospital room. This total time of 2-1/2 months is 3 times longer than normal. During all this time in the hospital I lost about 40 lbs.

Early on I told the doctors that I still have a lot of unfinished work to do and I'm not ready to go yet. And so here I am - back from the dead, with the help of your prayers and the will of the Big Guy Upstairs. I am determined to beat this illness, gain my weight back and get well. I might still have to undergo another surgery but if He wills it I should be back in circulation in the next few months. What is clear is that He has given me a second chance at life and I intend to make every moment count from now on.

Thanks again for your encouragement, prayers and support, and for the numerous cards, letters, email, texts and phone calls. I couldn't ask for better friends.

Take care and be well. Please remember that life is too short; live every day to its fullest.

I hope to see you soon.

God bless,

Joe

Mont La Salle Picnic Update 3

Hi guys!

This is the 3rd and, hopefully, last update on our summer picnic at Mont La Salle this Sunday July 15.

125 Lasallians, their spouses and some children as well have RSVP'd for this event. Many are also attending the 11AM mass at the Mont La Salle chapel. The picnic will start immediately after the mass. We are looking forward to a good fellowship among Bay Area alumni as well as with Brs. Fidelis (John O'Neill, ex-grade school principal at Taft), Aquinas (Dominic Berardelli, ex-grade school principal at Green Hills) and Br. Armando Garcia (ex-principal at Bacolod). Interested alumni can also visit with Brs. Felix and Antonio inside the Brothers' community center. Both Brothers are ailing and most probably cannot join us at the picnic grounds.

The DLSAANC is having this free picnic for its paid members. If necessary, new members can pay their annual dues at Mont La Salle. Menu for the day includes lechon, tritip BBQ, pok BBQ, palabok, vegetables, rice, fruit and dessert. The association will also provide soda and water. Alcoholic drinks are allowed on the premises; however, BYOB (bring your own booze). Alumni, especially those who are bringing addtional people other than their spouses, are of course welcome to bring additional food they can share with our community.

For lack of interest as well as insurance considerations, we have opted out on the use of the swimming pool. We however plan to have games to liven up the afternoon.

Once again, below are the directions to Mont La Salle:

Mont La Salle 4401 Redwood Rd.

Napa CA 94558

Take 29 North Exit Trancas/Redwood Road (Exit 19) Turn left on stoplight and continue on Redwood Rd. (West) Travel approximately 4.6 miles Look for a green County Sign on right side of the road Turn left and cross small bridge Travel 1.2 miles to Mont La Salle

Keep left at fork in the road and go through stone pillars and black iron gates.

TIP: If you get lost, ask for directions to the Hess Winery. They have leased the vineyards of Mont La Salle and their tasting room is adjacent to the Brothers community.

Also, remember NOT to park on the designated areas for the Brothers, DLS Institute, DLS Community, etc. You do not want your vehicle to be towed out in the hills of Napa!

See you on Sunday!

Mont La Salle Picnic Update 2

Hi guys!

We are just about one week away from our picnic on July 15!

Just a reminder....last day to RSVP is Sunday July 8. This will help us set the menu and activities for the day.

We also encourage our alumni at attend the 11AM mass at Mont La Salle. Members of our community may get involved in the liturgy.

For directions, please refer to the earlier update. Mont La Salle encourages picnic groups to carpool. Allow me also to quote below the parking instructions for Mont La Salle:

"Have your guests drive around the buildings to the back.

On the way there, they may be tempted to park in the three small lots to their right. The lots marked for "DLSI EMPLOYEES," "DE LA SALLE INSTITUTE," "PROVINCIALATE COMMUNITY," "NOVITIATE COMMUNITY" or any area referenced to "community," "family" and "employee" are strictly OFF-LIMITS.

As they turn the curve to the right, they MAY park under the trees, and on the left side as long as they do not interfere with the fire lanes or block driveways that must be kept clear for egress and emergency access.

They are welcome to park in the back lot by the pool as long as the spaces are available.

As they pass the pool area, they may pull to the left and park back by the maintenance sheds. As our property is first and foremost the private residence and home of the Christian Brothers, we respectfully ask that you please observe our parking regulations to ensure the safety of everyone."

Once again, we invite our alumni to join our picnic with Brothers Fidelis (John O'Neill), Aquinas (Dominic Berardelli), Felix Mason, Antonio Gonzaga and Armando Garcia, among others. The picnic is free for paid DLSAANC members and their spouses. You are welcome to bring your family along but we request that you bring additional food and/or drinks to share with our community.

See you soon!

Mont La Salle Picnic Update

Hi All!

It's exactly one month before we have our summer picnic at Mont La Salle and I have received many RSVPs already. This is great! I'm happy to inform everybody that Br. Aquinas aka Dominic Berardelli, who is currently posted at St. Mary's College in Moraga, has confirmed his attendance at the picnic. Also, Br. Fidelis aka John O'Neil, will be breaking away from his retreat to join us for the Sunday mass and picnic. Ditto with Br. Armando Garcia. However, the health condition of Brs. Felix and Antonio will most likely prevent them from joining us at the picnic grove. Nevertheless, Br. Ronald Rogenbach has given us permission to visit with the sick Brothers inside their community. The AA is currently making plans to lift their spirits during this difficult time.

I wasn't going to post directions until much later but in response to many queries, here are the directions as lifted from the Mont La Salle website:

Mont La Salle 4401 Redwood Rd.

Napa CA 94558

Take 29 North Exit Trancas/Redwood Road (Exit 19) Turn left on stoplight and continue on Redwood Rd. (West) Travel approximately 4.6 miles Look for a green County Sign on right side of the road Turn left and cross small bridge Travel 1.2 miles to Mont La Salle

Keep left at fork in the road and go through stone pillars and black iron gates.

BTW, in case you have one of those wine country maps showing the region's various wineries, you can follow the directions to Hess Winery. Said winery is adjacent to Mont La Salle.

Lastly, in order to help us prepare for the event, please RSVP no later than July 8.

Thank you and see you soon!

Summer Picnic With The Brothers

Hi All!

It is my pleasure to announce that this year's summer picnic will be held on Sunday July 15 at Mont La Salle, the retirement community of the Christian Brothers in Napa that was once the site of the renown Christian Brothers winery (since sold/leased to Hess Wines, which now operates a tasting room and modern museum nearby). The picnic will allow the Bay Area alumni not only to have a fun day among themselves but also visit with former mentors now spending their golden years at Mont La Salle. This includes Br. Felix Masson (Green Hills and Bacolod teacher), Br. Fidelis (aka John O'Neil and Taft principal/teacher), Br. Antonio Gonzaga (Taft teacher) and Br. Armando Garcia (Bacolod teacher). In addition, we are inviting Br. Aquinas aka Dominic Berardelli FSC (LSGH principal), now posted at St. Mary's College in Moraga, to join us on that day. Our alumni are invited to attend the 11am mass at the Mont La Salle chapel. The picnic will immediately follow at the picnic grove. Per tradition, the DLSAANC will take care of the lechon, BBQ and drinks. Please RSVP yours truly so we can plan accordingly. (If you have a party of 3 or more, we would appreciate it if you can bring along a dish to share with our community.) Also, let us know if there is a certified lifeguard among us so that we can use the swimming pool. Directions, activities, etc. will be announced at a later date. For now, just be sure to set aside this special date! See you soon!

Kundirana SF Concert on May 12

Dear Friends and Relatives,

Once a year, a music ministry comes to SF to raise hope for the Juveniles in Bahay Pag-asa (House of Hope, a home for young prisoners that the Christian Brothers built in Bacolod, Philippines) The Kundirana sing beautiful songs to raise funds for the juveniles who would have been imprisoned with hardened criminals if not for the intervention of Bahay Pag-asa. Bahay Pag-asa works with the Philippine judiciary system and has changed their lives in many ways. These juveniles are given board and lodging, an education, and are trained to become productive members of society. A recent visitor from SF could not believe the gentleness the boys have developed. A donated piano made it possible for half of them to learn to play the piano. A German national donated his talent to teach them to make ham which is now famous in Bacolod . Alan Silva, a jeweler in the Bay Area, taught them how to make jewelry just like the Ones you see at Gumps. The boys live a life of prayer and work with the guidance of the Brothers. This email was specifically sent to you, in the hope that you may want to share and enjoy the gift of giving to the lowest of the low in the Philippines. Come share your blessings and in helping others, you definitely will help yourself and enjoy an evening of fine music. Your ticket to the concert serves as your donation. Suggested donations are $25 for adults and $12 for children. The concert tickets are a tax deduction because the De LaSalle Alumni Association of Northern California is a 501(c)3. You may use your check as a receipt for your donation or equest one and the DLSAANC will send you an acknowledgement for tax deduction purposes. The concert will be held at 6:00 PM on May 12th, at the South San Francisco High School Auditorium on 400 B Street South San Francisco 94080. The wives of the Alumni will be selling food and drinks before the show and during the intermission. If you are interested in helping the less fortunate in our country and enjoying good music by a group of Christian Gentlemen -- please call Tom Consunji at 650-8923312 or Christine at 650-3451441. I am pleased to announce the third leg of the 2007 DLS Greens Tournament Schedule, as follows:

Right now I have 32 slots. On April 20, I have to send them a check for the final count of players. I will not be able to make an allowance for late sign-ups as I do with our other tournaments. If you commit to play and later back out, you will still be held responsible for the tournament fee, as it would have already been paid to Poppy Hills.

GREENerations Part 2

March 21, 2007

Dear Lasallian / Lasallite,

Greeting in St. La Salle!

Last March 03, 2007, the De La Salle University (DLSU) College Class of 1982 celebrated its 25th Year at the De La Salle University Football Field at 5:00 pm.

Together with Grade School, High School and College batches '42, '47, '52, '57, '62, '67, '72, and '77, as our co-celebrators, we were able to gather over 1,500 alumni /alumnae together with their families and friends.

After one and a half year of preparations, months of practices, hours of sentimental and moving videos, musical arrangements and dance rehearsals, everything was ready for the big event.

To culminate such a grand production, a 40' X 20' stage c/o Summa Kumagai, was set up in the football field with three (3) huge video screens, and intelligent lighting and state of the art sound system were in placed together with the instruments and a ramp that can handle the entry of a Harley Davidson Motorcycle. As the show was about to begin, continuous rain fell in the football field of DLSU.

However, this did not dampen the Lasallian Spirit. We moved inside the covered areas with make shift sound systems, rows of chairs and tables and proceeded with the festivities that featured only some of the live performances.

We did not allow the rain to douse the ANIMO in us, and that is why we will continue what we had started fourteen months ago.

On March 31, 2007 at the Yuchengco Theater in De La Salle University at 7pm, we will reunite again.

Proposed DLSU-ADMU Match Play

Dear fellow Lasallians,

I just want to let you know the tentative plans are in the process of having a La Salle - Ateneo golf event in April.

WHAT: La Salle - Ateneo Team Match Play WHEN: Saturday, April 28, 2007 TIME: TBD WHERE: Lake Merced Golf Course, Daly City (PRV) FEE: $150 (subject to change), includes green fee, cart, and buffet meal after the round (at Henry's by Westborough) PARTICIPANTS: Only La Salle or Ateneo alumni with valid GHIN index TEAM COMPOSITION: Each school will consist of 16 golfers FORMAT: Match Play using handicaps (percentage to be determined) SCORING (tentative):

The eight two-man teams (ranked from lowest handicap to highest) of each club compete against each other in three simultaneous matches as shown below. The total possible points for each team: 6; for each club: 48.

a. Match #1 (2 points). The lowest-handicapped player on each of the two-man teams plays his corresponding opponent in an 18-hole individual match. b. Match #2 (2 points). The second lowest-handicapped player on each of the two-man teams plays his corresponding opponent in an 18-hole individual match. c. Match #3 (2 points). Each two-man team plays their corresponding opponents in an 18 hole four-ball match.

d. Ties. A tie in any of these matches results in 1 point awarded to each team.

WINNER: School that scores 25 points or more.

SELECTION PROCESS: We will use our DLS Greens' Poppy Ridge tournament on March 25 (Sun) to select and invite the top 12 players from the tournament, based on low net, (4 other players will be captain's pick--by yours truly) to represent the school in this event. If a selected player declines the invite, the next player on the result's list will receive the invite.

Is this something you might be interested in playing and representing our school colors? Also, an opportunity to play a nice private golf course but with a purpose? Then sign up for our Poppy Ridge tournament on March 25 for a chance to be invited. This is a competition we must win as pride and prestige are at stake!

Thanks,

Matt

FSC Bulletin 2007-9

On behalf of Brother Visitor Dodo Fernandez, FSC:

27February2007

2007-9

Dear Brothers and Lasallian Partners:

POSTHUMOUS AWARDS. Our three recently-deceased Brothers were honored in a special ceremony by De La Salle Health Sciences Campus: Brother Rafael Donato FSC for Institutional Leadership; Brother Andrew Gonzalez FSC for having been an Institutional Visionary; and Brother Leander Fidelis Leddy FSC for his Special Service in the cause of the Lasallian pastoral mission. The awards were given on 16 February 2007 on the occasion of the De La Sale University Medical Center’s 25th Anniversary.

UPDATE ON BR. JOHN JOHNSTONFSC. Brother Peter Gilfedder FSC has kindly shared with us an update on Brother John Johnston’s health: “Brother John has completed the radiation therapy to his left leg and he has less pain now. He is walking without a cane and is able to drive. He has completed physical therapy to strengthen his leg muscles. Br. John started back on his chemotherapy program

Monday, Jan. 29 and continues the every-other-week schedule with the same medications he had before the radiation therapy. As expected, he has more fatigue during the chemo but he is able to conduct his affairs and still get the rest he needs. Chemotherapy will be an 8-month program.” In my recent communication with Br. John, he said he is indeed trying to get back to a normal existence by gradually doing some work that would be compatible with the requirements of his medical therapy. Let us all pray for this good Brother’s complete and rapid recovery.

FSC Bulletin 2007-8: Br. Justin Lucian FSC

On behalf of Brother Visitor Br. Edmundo Fernandez FSC:

Brother Justin Lucian in the first Brother Visitor of the Philippine District. It sadens us to know that he is suffering from cancer. I ask all of you to pray for God's merciful and healing Hand to be upon him during these trying days. Following is a verbatim report of Brother Justin's health condition sent to us by Pat Bader, his nurse in Memphis, Tennessee, USA.

"Br. Justin discovered that the lung cancer he has been battling the past 2 years has recurred. There is metastasis to the bones of the spine, ribs and jaw. The lymph nodes of the chest are affected and the lung tumors are larger. At this point, Br. Justin's priority is symptom management. Oxygen and period "taps" to the lungs to draw off fluid that is accumulating from the cancer manage the shortness of breath. He is resting frequently to overcome the fatigue and malaise. We are thankful that he has very little pain. His appetite is a little better with smaller meals and snacks. The wonderful community of Brothers at CBU is assisting Br. Justin with his needs. The Brothers are praying and reading with him a number of times a day. He is now on the Hospice program to assist with his comfort needs as he continues on this phase of his journey. Your prayerful support has been a great help to Br. Justin!"

Pat added that despite the widespread cancer, Brother Justin is as witty, engaging, and gracious as ever. Our gratitude to Pat for her selfless assistance and to Brother Francis Carr of the District of the Midwest for helping us obtain information on Brother Justin.

Fraternally,

Dodo

Subject: [DeLaSalle_HS62] Remembering Bro. Ben [July 7, 1927 - January 3, 2004]

To Members of HS '62 - Bro. Benedict's Boys!

Let us remember our good friend, confidant, and mentor - a soft, warm, loving person with a tough exterior (as aptly described by John Cocuaco) today, the third anniversary of his passing. Following are articles that make up a good biographical sketch of Bro. Ben.

St. John Baptist de la Salle, pray for us.

Live Jesus in our hearts forever!

********************

Three years ago [January 3, 2004], Br Josiah Benedict FSC passed away at the age of 76 while vacationing in Baguio City. Two days later [Mon Jan 5, 2004 10:20 am], I posted at the LSGH Manos e-group this decades-old article I found in the 1963 High School Green & White.

Reverend Brother J. Benedict, F.S.C.

"An athletic intellectual with thinning blonde hair, alert of eye and rugged in build..." This phrase was the description accorded to Rev. Brother Josiah Benedict, F.S.C., by the October - 1958, issue of the 'La Sallite,' on the occasion of his arrival at De La Salle College, Manila.

Brother Benedict spent his first semester here teaching religion and algebra to sophomores and freshmen and familiarizing himself with the educational methods used in the Philippines. In March, 1959, he was officially appointed principal of the high school.

During his term of office, Brother Benedict made considerable improvements in the high school set-up. He updated the curriculum by discarding obsolescent textbooks and by instituting new methods of instruction, particularly in the science courses. He also established a remedial reading class to help those students who had academic difficulties due to slow or faulty reading habits.

Another advance which can be credited to Brother Benedict's administration was the tremendous progress in guidance counselling. In accordance with the College's aim of "developing the whole man," Brother Benedict, together with the Guidance Director, Rev. Brother J. Lucien, F.S.C., devised a guidance-interview program for the six-hundred high school students.

Brother Benedict's administrative abilitites were so widely recognized that he was elected the chairman of the boys' high school division of the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines for the past three years in succession. In this position, Brother Benedict was able to influence hundreds of high schools all over the Philippines.

At the close of his tenure of office, Brother Benedict left for the U.S. on a vacation. One of the things he planned to do was to visit other Christian Brothers' schools to get "new ideas," and to request (for) textbooks to be used at the newly-established La Sallian high schools in Lipa and Iligan, and at the free-school in Bacolod.

Brother Benedict, F.S.C., a keen administrator, a devoted worker and a loyal friend, will long be remembered for advancing the educational capabilities of D.L.S. in particular, and of the Philippines in general. 'Mabuhay' for a job well done, Brother Benedict, ... may further success be yours in your new position.

Note: According to the above publication, Bro. Ben was the Principal of De La Salle High School from June, 1959 to January, 1963. He was replaced by Reverend Brother S. Malachy, F.S.C. (yep, the 'Alma Mater' Bro with the harmonica) who assumed office in February, 1963.

Hail To De La Salle! POSTCARDS

The second part [2004] of the One Song Trilogy was dedicated to Bro Ben.

Josiah Benedict Lidinsky

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Brother Josiah Benedict Lidinsky FSC (July 7, 1927 - January 3, 2004), was a De La Salle Brother and widely considered to be an institution among the De La Salle Brothers in the Philippines. He has assumed a number of responsibilities in De La Salle University-Manila as well as the Brothers in the Philippines, including teaching, administration, and alumni affairs. Br. J. Benedict died on January 3, 2004.

Br Benedict's First CommunionEarly life

John Wenceslaus Edward Lidinsky was born on July 7, 1927 in Chicago, Illinois to John Lidinsky and Rose Kudlata who were Czech immigrants.

<< Br Benedict's First Holy Communion. Picture courtesy of Tom Consunji who often hosted in his former home in Palo Alto, CA the late Br Ben whenever the golf-loving Brother was in the Bay Area.

When he was 13, he entered the La Salle Institute Novitiate in Glencoe, Missouri. His years in the junior novitiate inspired him to finalize his vows as a Christian Brother in 1952.

After the La Salle Institute, Br. Benedict then proceeded to study in Minnesota's St. Mary's College and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in Math and Physics. After graduation, he was assigned to teach in several collegest in the United States and was eventually appointed Dean of Discipline and the Guidance Director at the De La Salle Academy in Kansas City.

Assignment to the Philippines

After taking up graduate studies in math at Notre Dame University in Indiana, Br. Benedict was assigned to the Philippines. He was then assigned to the High School Department as its Principal by Br. H. Gabriel Connon FSC, who was then the President and Director of the De La Salle College, and Provincial of the Brothers in the Philippines. He then moved to the College's Engineering Department, where his mastery of the Spanish language and Mathematics proved to be an asset to the college curriculum.

In 1971, Br. Benedict was appointed Executive Officer of De La Salle University and in 1972, was named the first Director of the De La Salle's Computer Center, a position which he held until 1978. He was also elected as the Data Processing Management Association of the Philippines' Executive Vice-President in 1976.

In 1978, after his stint as the director of the De La Salle Computer Center, he was appointed Vice-President for Development and Alumni Affairs after Br. Connon died; a position he held until 2002, when he was named Vice-President for Development and Alumni Affairs Emeritu
