Farewell, Captain!

By: Romi Beza

Feb. 1, 2002 -- Association President Ramon del Rosario along with five former presidents -- Joe Batto, Romi Beza, Jim Brown, Mandy Reyes and Mari Valles -- led the DLSAANC delegation in attending the memorial mass for the beloved 83 year old Charlie Russell and condoling with his family today at St. Dunston's Church in Millbrae. The Captain -- as he was lovingly called -- passed away on Jan. 28 and was cremated a few days later.

Joe Batto, a close friend of the Russell family, spoke on behalf of the association during the eulogy portion of the afternoon service. Joe outlined the exemplary life that Charlie lived as husband, father, athlete, U.S. Navy pilot, PAL executive, DLS alumni director and one of the founding fathers of the DLSAANC. Mementos of Charlie's many accomplishments were proudly displayed by his clan at the reception that followed the memorial service.

Charlie passed away at the local sports club moments after winning what proved to be his last racquetball game. Charlie was a winner until the very end.  He is survived by Marion, his wife of 55 years, eight [out of nine] children and fifteen [out of sixteen] grandchildren.

The DLSAANC salutes this outstanding Christian gentleman and pray for his eternal repose. God Bless You, Charlie!
