Consunji, Whitehall Win Poppy Ridge Tourney

July 23, 2008 -- Tom Consunji and guest player Jerry Whitehall shot net 67 and 66, respectively, to win their divisions at the club's monthly tournament held yesterday at the popular Rees Jones-designed  Poppy Ridge Golf Course in Livermore. While the usual windy conditions presented additional challenge to the 29 golfers who competed, it was nevertheless a relief of sorts due to the heat wave that the region was having in recent days.  The golfers teed-off the white tees, making the tournament a relatively short 6,175-yard yet tough 134-slope rated par 72 test.  The fairways were in excellent condition and the fast greens became even slicker as the afternoon sun and wind dried up the course.

Tom shot the day's lowest gross (76) and was 3 strokes ahead of a 3-way tie for second place in the Masters division.  Jojo Espiritu and Mandy Reyes won the tiebreaker, leaving hard luck Matt Hizon out of the medal standings.  In the Classics division, ageless wonder Bill Gardner continued his winning streak by beating Nani Ramirez in a tiebreaker for 2nd place.  The day's closest-to-the-pin contests featured two down slope holes: the 150-yard 2nd hole at the Zinfandel course (Classics division) and the 171-yard 3rd hole at the Chardonnay course (Masters).  The day's bragging rights went to CJ Sarino in the Classics division and Tom Consunji in the Masters division.

The tournament marked also the start of the club's match play competition to determine the inaugural DLS Greens Club Champion.  The club's Top 16 golfers -- who were seeded according to their performance in the previous three tournaments held since March -- played in the day's first four foursomes.  In the upper bracket, Orly Mayor narrowly beat Mandy Rosales 3 & 1, Rico Medina edged Ron Riego de Dios 1up, Matt Hizon beat  Frank Roxas 4 & 3 and Enrique Olives trounced Jovy de Villa 4 & 3.  In the lower bracket, Bill Gardner edged Mike Monserrat 3 & 1, Jojo Espiritu prevailed over Tony Garmendia (who competed in lieu of the indisposed Manny Noguera) 4 & 3, Tom Consunji beat Nani Ramirez 4 & 3 and Romi Beza outplayed Tony Berdal 7 & 6.  The winners move on to the quarterfinals at the next monthly tournament at the Monarch Bay Golf Course in San Leandro on July 19.  Quarterfinal match play pairings feature Mayor v. Medina and Hizon v. Olives in the upper bracket and Gardner v. Espiritu and Consunji v. Beza in the lower bracket.
