Roxas, J. Mercado Top Monarch Bay Tourney

July 20, 2008 -- Frank Roxas won his second tournament of the year in the Masters division by scoring an impressive gross score of 81 (net 63) at yesterday's monthly DLS Greens tournament held at the wind-swept Monarch Bay Golf Club in San Leandro. Frank's score was second to the day's best gross score of 6-ver-par 77 posted by Enrique Olives, who placed second in the tournament with a net 69.  Third place in the Masters division went to Jojo Espiritu with gross and net scores of 89 and 73, respectively.

In the Classics division, Joji Mercado won by four strokes over  Art Dancel and Tony Garmendia, both of whom posted identical net 70 scores.  Art, however, won the tiebreaker to place second.

Twenty-two golfers joined this month's tournament after two members canceled at the last minute for health reasons.  Monarch Bay had mostly wide-open tee shots but its relatively short 6,061 yardage put a premium on the short game. The usual windy conditions kicked in the afternoon to make the bayside holes a little more challenging.  The wide-open but wind-swept par-3 178-yard 17th hole illustrated this fact when only one golfer, Frank Roxas, landed on the green to win the closest-to-the-pin honors.  Tony Berdal won the Classics division counterpart in the relatively tame 129-yard 10th hole located near the clubhouse.

Frank's victory in the Masters division catapulted him to second place in the Golfer-of-the-Year standings, a mere 10 points off golden boy Bill Gardner's 360 points.  Art's second place win in Classics division also put him in solo third at 270 points.

The ongoing Club Match Play Championship  was held concurrently with the Monarch Bay tournament.  Winners in the lower bracket posted identical margins of 4&3: Jojo Espiritu over Bill Gardner and Tom Consunji over Romi Beza (actually played weeks earlier due to Tom's vacation).  The upper bracket had contrasting results.  Enrique won by default over the indisposed Matt Hizon and Orly Mayor and Rico Medina were all square after 18 holes of play yesterday.  Rico and Orly played extra holes this morning -- also at Monarch Bay GC -- and Orly prevailed at the 9th and final  hole to win 1 up.  The winners, Espritu v. Consunji and Olives v. Mayor, move on to next month's tournament to play the semi-finals.
