Olives, Medina Pull Away @ Palo Alto

August 17, 2008 -- Enrique Olives and Rico Medina were run-away winners at yesterday's tournament held at the Palo Alto Golf Course. Olives coasted to a 5-stroke victory in the Masters division with a net score of 65 and also posted the day's lowest gross score with a magnificent 2-over par 73.  Matt Hizon came in second with a net 70 and once-in-a-blue-moon tournament participant Jim Gochoco beat two other golfers in a tiebreaker to win third place honors.  In the Classics division, Rico Medina took advantage of the relatively easy course to post a net 62, which was 6 strokes better than runner-up Art Dancel and 8 strokes lower than 3rd placer Bobby Panlasigue. 

This month's tournament attracted 31 golfers, including 4 guest players.  The golfers were almost evenly distributed into the Masters and Classics divisions.  The Masters division golfers teed off the 6,580-yard 120-slope rated blue tees while the Classic division golfers started off the 6,249-yard 117-slope rated white tees.  Bill "I'm Still Swinging" Gardner won the Classics division closest-to-the-pin honors at the 153-yard 8th hole while Tom Consunji won the Masters division counterpart at the 155-yard 11th hole.

Enrique's red-hot play enabled him to coast to an 8 & 6 victory over Orly Mayor in their semi-final match for the club's match play championship.  The other semi-final pairing of Tom Consunji v Jojo Espiritu  has been postponed to a later date since the latter is out of town.  The finals will be held concurrently with the October tournament at Franklin Canyon Golf Course.

Going to the last two tournaments of the 2008 DLS Greens season, Bill Gardner maintained his slim 10 point lead over Frank Roxas.  This tournament's 1-2 placing of Rico Medina and Art Dancel propelled them to a two-way tie for third at 350 points, which is 60 points behind Bill's first place score.
