DLSAANC : DLS Greens Golf Club : Olives, J. Mercado Win Franklin Canyon Tourney; Gardner is Golfer of the Year Olives, J. Mercado Win Franklin Canyon Tourney; Gardner is Golfer of the Year October 20, 2008 -- Enrique Olives and Joji Mercado won the Masters and Classics divisions, respectively, of the year's last tournament held a last Saturday Oct. 18 at the Robert Muir Graves-designed Franklin Canyon Golf Club in Hercules, CA. It was the second victory of the year for both golfers. Enrique put in the day's lowest gross score of 2-over par 74 (net 66) on the 6,152 yard, 125 slope-rated golf course. Ron Riego de Dios posted the next lowest gross score of 76 (net 69) to place second in the Masters division. Third place in that division went to Dennis Aguirre with a gross 87 (net 73). In the Classics division, Joji actually won a tie-breaker over Dino Africa, who also posted a net 72 for the round. Another tie-breaker came into play to break a 3-man logjam at net 74 to determine the division's third placer. Rico Medina won that tie-breaker over Mike Monserrat and Alan Silva. Only 19 golfers participated in the year's last tournament. The golfers had a rare mid-morning tee time although it was delayed for 30 minutes. The first group teed-off at 10AM amid chilly and even windy conditions which eventually gave in to splendid autumn weather as the round progressed. Course condition was not as good, however, with several brown fairway spots and uneven greens. The course nevertheless featured a fair challenge to the golfers. Reading the greens, in particular, proved testy since the speed varied from hole to hole. Just about the only excitement leading to the tournament was the ongoing Golfer-of-the-Year contest. The contest essentially was between two golfers, Bill Gardner and Frank Roxas, who were separated only by 10 points and were mathematically beyond the reach of the other golfers for the Golfer-of-the-Year honors. Since neither placed in this tournament, that margin remained the same and the club's hippest golfer, Bill Gardner, romped off with the award. Bill's victory marked the fourth different winner of the Golfer-of-the-Year Award in as many years. Manny Noguera won the inaugural Golfer-of-the-Year competition in 2005 and was followed by Tom Consunji and Art Dancel in succeeding years. Golfer-of-the-Year points are awarded to the Top 5 lowest net scorers as well to each participant of the club's tournaments. The winner of the Golfer-of-the-Year competition gets to have his name engraved in the perpetual trophy that he gets to keep until the next winner is determined. Congratulations to Enrique, Joji and Bill! See you all in next year's tournaments!
