June 23, 2009 -- The monthly tournament of the DLS Greens 2009 Tour produced another run-away winner in Frank Roxas, who topped the Masters division by 5 strokes at the June 14 competition held at the relatively short 6,224 yard, par-72 Poppy Ridge Golf Course located amid the rolling hill vineyards of Livermore, CA. Frank scored net 68 to beat runner-up Jim Gochoco, who posted the day's best gross score of 83. Frank's gross score wasn't too shabby, either; at 86, it was the day's second best. Frank won the tournament in the back nine, where he scored the day's best 9-hole score of 3-over par 39, an 8-stroke improvement over his front nine score. Third place in the Masters division was Matt Hizon, who scored a net 75. Matt also had a 5-stroke rally in the back nine to win a tie-breaker over Monching Dumancas. The Classics division had a tighter contest with Alan Silva edging out both Bobby Panlasigue and Bill Gardner by one stroke. Bill won the tie-breaker to clinch second place but Bobby's gross score of 89 was notable since it ended up as the tournament's fourth best gross score. Coincidentally, both division winners also bagged closest-to-the-pin honors in their respective divisions. In a departure from previous tournaments held at triple-tract Poppy Ridge, the DLS Greens golfers tackled the tougher Merlot course for the first nine holes before winding down at the more familiar Chardonnay course. Front nine scores of the 24 golfers who competed averaged 4 strokes higher than the back nine even though the winds kicked up more as the afternoon progressed. The golfers were challenged not only by the wind but also by fast greens, elevation changes and, of course, the very penal elephant grass rough. Despite the challenges, the alumni and their guests still enjoyed their round and the 19th hole banter at the clubhouse. In the ongoing Golfer-of-the-Year cumulative standings, Matt Hizon and Manny Noguera maintained their 1-2 positions at 300 and 270 points, respectively. Frank's and Bill's strong Poppy Ridge finishes catapulted them to a 4-man third place logjam at 240 points with Monching Dumancas and Mandy Rosales. Next tournament: Crystal Springs Golf course, Burlingame.
