Noguera Wins Poppy Ridge Tourney and GOY

Medina Wins Class B Division

November 12, 2011 -- Manny "Yes, I'm a 15 Handicapper" Noguera (pictured at right  after a fairway shot at Hole # 14) won the 2011 Golfer of the Year (GOY) award in style by winning the Flight A Division of the year's last tournament held today at the Poppy Ridge Golf Club in Livermore. Going into the tournament, only Clement Yu stood in the way of Manny's unprecedented fourth GOY award. The two golfers were put in the same foursome to enliven the GOY competition but Manny ruled out any possible drama by taking control of their virtual match play early in the front nine with his steady short game. Clem usually outdrove Manny but couldn't match his drives with an accurate short game and eventually faded out of the Flight's winning circle. Manny actually won a tiebreaker with Mike Manalo, who could have won the tournament outright had he avoided five 3-putts he had during his round. The fast greens confounded many golfers during the round, causing several multiple putts. Indeed, the lightning-fast greens were even slicker than the private club greens which several of the DLS Greens golfers are members of. Jojo "Crooner" Flores  was a close third at net 73 while Ron Riegodedios had the day's lowest gross score bragging rights by scoring 83.

Rico Medina was a runaway winner in the Flight B division with a net 69, which made him the tournament's over-all winner. It was Rico's first tournament win of the year. Orly Mayor was division runner-up with a net 74.

Twenty-two golfers participated in the year's last tournament, which was originally scheduled to be the kick-off tourney of the year but was rescheduled due to inclement weather. Although on the cool side, the weather cooperated this time and even the usual afternoon wind was not around due to the fall weather pattern. The golfers tackled the 130-slope rated 6,224-yard white tees.
