Sept. 22, 2012 — Jim Gochoco (at left, being handed his trophy by the green-shirted DLSAANC President Irvin Sevilla) posted the day’s lowest gross score of 4-over par 76 to win the 2012 edition of the Fil-Am Golf Championship held today at the Deer Ridge golf course in Brentwood. Jim edged out runners-up Irvin Sevilla and Ron Riego de Dios, who scored one and two strokes back respectively.
Forty-three Lasallians and friends — including some Ateneans — participated in the annual golf fundraiser of the De La Salle Alumni Association of Northern California. This year’s tournament is the 8th staging of the event that raises funds for the association’s various sponsored charities in the Philippines. Tournament organizers had the golfers tee off at the 5,344-yard white tees to make the tournament more competitive. While long hitters had a clear advantage on the relatively short course, the average hacker could still score pars with a accurate approach shots and/or pitch-and-putt games. The Andy Raugust-designed golf course nevertheless provided a challenge for the golfers with its fast and subtle-breaking greens, doglegs and elevation changes.
In the Flight A division, Clem Yu separated himself from the pack with a net score of 7-under par 65 to beat Irvin Sevilla’s net 68 and Matt Hizon’s net 69. In Flight B, Ricky Llanes won via a tie-breaker with Butch Rastrullo. Both scored net 69s. In the Callaway division, Clem’s brother Gilbert Yu made it a family double celebration by beating Peter Yujuico by two strokes with a net 69.
The golfers enjoyed good golf weather during their afternoon round and refreshments at the clubhouse thereafter. Trophies were awarded to the division winners after the dinner. Fund-raising raffles were done as well with prizes donated by Matt Hizon(one box Titleist golf balls), Manny Noguera ($25 certificates each at Sisig and House of Ongpin Restaurant), Romi Beza (one box of Nike golf balls and one round at Oakhurst Country Club), Mike Manalo (two boxes Titleist golf balls), Dino Africa (two boxes of Titleist golf balls), Emma Magbitang (bottle of wine), Tom Consunji (three sleeves of Titleist golf balls), Irvin Sevilla(one box of Precept golf balls) and Orly Mayor (six golf towels).
DLSAANC director Matt Hizon took charge of this year’s tournament. Wife Reena and daughter Guilliana made it a family affair by helping out at the registration desk as well as being hole-in-one witness and raffle assistants.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to another successful Fil-Am tournament!
