April 13, 2013Ron Riego de Dios and Gilbert Talavera won the A and B division, respectively, at the year’s second tournament held at San Leandro’s Monarch Bay Golf Club.Organizers put a twist in the competition by replacing the usual low net scoring with a modified Stableford scoring. Four points were awarded for eagles, three for birdies, two for pars and a point for bogeys. As it turns out, the format made the competition more interesting, if not more fun.

In the A Division, Ron edged Monching Dumancas, 35 to 34, to win. Ron led Monching by 2 at the turn but the Negrense (Monching) rallied to tie the score at 32 all at the par 3 penultimate hole with a net birdie while Ron stumbled with a bogey. Ron however responded with a birdie on the 18th’s par 4, which Monching only managed to par, to win. The duo also garnered the day’s closest-to-the-pin honors with Ron getting closest on hole # 4 and Monching showing his skill at the 10th hole.

In the B Division, Gilbert won by two points even though slumping on the back nine with 8 points after the front nine’s 18 points. Three golfers — Dino Africa, Nutsie Maloles and Orly Mayor — tied with 24 points. Orly won the tiebreaker because he is the tournament’s organizer….not (well, he is the organizer but won fair and square on the countback system)!  Orly played steady golf by scoring 12 points each on the front and back nines while Nutsie and Dino both slumped after the turn to lose their front nine leading scores. Indeed, the back nine proved to be a challenge for most of the golfers because British Open-like winds whipped up by then in the semi-links style golf course.
