April 4, 2013 — De La Salle Greens Golf Club announced today that Clement Yu won the 2012 Golfer of the Year (GOY) award. The award goes to the club member who accumulates the most number of points during the 8-tournament long season. 150 points are awarded to each tournament’s winner, 130 to the first runner-up, 110 to the second runner-up, 90 to the third runner-up and 70 to the fourth runner-up. 50 points is also automatically given to each golfer who participates in the tournament.
Clem Yu was one of three club members who participated in the eight tournaments held at (in chronological order of occurrence) Poppy Ridge (Livermore), Poppy Hills (Pebble Beach), Metropolitan (Oakland),Summitpointe (Milpitas), Bridges (San Ramon), Deer Ridge (Brentwood), Santa Clara (Santa Clara) and Monarch Bay (San Leandro). Clem won one tournament (the Fil-Am Championship at Deer Ridge) and placed second (Metropolitan and Bridges) and third (Summitpointe and Monarch) each twice. The full participation essentially won the 2012 GOY award for Clem. He edged runner-up Rico Medina, 820-810, but the latter was not able to compete in the Santa Clara tournament. To his credit, Clem not only garnered the automatic 50 participation points for the aforesaid tournament but placed 4th to garner 90 points.
2012 GOY runner-up Rico Medina started the season strong by being the runner-up in the season’s first two tournaments at the two Poppy’s (Ridge and Hills) and winning outright the next two competition at Metropolitan and Summitpointe. However, he failed to place in the winner’s circle in the next two tournaments before staging a spirited rally by winning the last tournament at Monarch Bay. But Clem did his part to win the 2012 GOY award by placing third at the year’s last tournament to edge Rico by 10 points for the GOY award.
It was essentially a two man race all season long between Clem and Rico as they increasingly put distance between them and the rest of the field. As it turns out, the winner was determined at the season’s very last tournament with both competitors doing what they had to do to win it all. A far third for the 2012 GOY award was Nutsie Maloles (540 pts), followed by Orly Mayor (480 pts) and many-time GOY winner Manny Noguera(470). Aside from Clem and Rico, the other tournament winners during the season were Gilbert Talavera, Nutsie Maloles, Mandy Rosales and Jun-Jun Rima. Other than the previously-mentioned names, runners-up during the season include Ron Riego de Dios, Nani Ramires, Lou Madamba, Arnie Mercado, Matt Hizon, Irvin Sevilla, Joji Mercado and Jun Magbitang.
Twenty club members competed in at least two tournaments in the year. Close to 30 DLS Greens club members participated in at least one of the eight tournaments. Tournament organizers are expecting more participation in the 2013 season by, among others, re-formatting the Golfer of the Year competition to make it more fun, competitive and interesting.
Congratulations to Clem for a well-deserved win!
